Crohn's and Colitis UK Fundraiser Walks 2014

It's not long to go now until the 2014 Crohn's and Colitis UK Fundraiser Walks get underway. They are taking place in London, York, Rutland and Edinburgh. You can even take part on bicycle in Rutland!

Our celebrity Ambassador, Lewis Moody, tells us more about the walks:

I was diagnosed with Colitis when I was 21, and found the help of Crohn’s and Colitis UK to be invaluable.

After recovering from a particularly bad flare-up where I spent most of Christmas in hospital, I decided to give something back and ran the London 10,000.I then decided to challenge myself further by climbing Africa’s legendary Kilimanjaro.

To reach my fundraising target I organised two live music events with the help of local bands and artists. I also recorded a charity single to sell at the events.

As well as all that I organised a 10k Starlight Charity Walk with local firefighters and held a quiz night at my local pub.

Giveacar for Crohn's and Colitis UK

This is a long shot... but, if you know of anyone with a car that's going to go for scrap, it could be put to better use...

Give some festive cheer this year and donate an old car through Giveacar with the proceeds going to Crohn's and Colitis UK.

A scrap car donation raises a minimum of £90 which could help us to provide much-needed support through our helplines.

Red Hot Raffle winners announced!

Taking place on Thursday 12 December, the raffle managed to raised almost £61,000 to fund research into Crohn’s and Colitis.

The ticket which won our top prize was sold by Georgina Vrakettas-Knight who went all-out to support the raffle, selling an incredible 551 tickets.

We were delighted to welcome our Ambassador and TV personality Carrie Grant to draw this year's Red Hot for Research raffle.

Every ticket had an equal chance of winning, however some of our winners bought only a few tickets. We are grateful to everyone who bought or sold tickets.

Office staff wear Christmas jumpers and raise funds for Save the Children

Following the success of our ‘Wear it Pink’ day in October, staff at Crohn’s and Colitis UK decided to get involved in Save the Children’s ‘Christmas Jumper Day’.


The festive jumpers have helped everyone get into the Christmas spirit, along with lunchtime Christmas carols, mulled wine (non-alcoholic of course), Christmas cupcakes and ginger cake.

While we’ve been having fun, we have also been able to support a charity who save children’s lives in some of the toughest parts of the world – from Syria to Liberia, Haiti to Bangladesh.

With huge thanks to everyone who took part and made Friday the 13^th a day worth getting out of bed for.

Red Hot Research Raffle 2013

Our Red Hot for Research Raffle will raise funds for much-needed research. Sell tickets to family, friends, colleagues, yourself, total strangers (except people on the street), ... anyone and everyone!

Great Tips for Fundraising

If you're thinking of doing fund raising for us (or indeed anyone) then these tips will be really handy. Rylan Clark (yes, him off the telly - X Factor and Big Brother) has been doing just that this year on Celebrity Family Fortunes and Tipping Point. 

While your fundraising activities might not include a stint on ITV (although if it does - kudos!!), the same principles apply:

Gift Aid - Increase the value of donations (including sponsorship) by 25p in every £1. Find out how by clicking here.

Matched giving – Some employers will match the money you raise. Others may donate or support you in other ways especially if you can thank them publicly - a room for your event, catering supplies, printing, stationery, or raffle prizes such as a day off, a late start or an early finish. Some employers are connected to grant-making trusts or foundations.

Donations of money, services or gifts in kind – Could friends, family, local shops and businesses donate prizes or supplies, or sponsor aspects of your event? We can provide an endorsement letter to show your fundraising is genuine and also information for potential donors. Some businesses may buy advertising space in your programme.

Local sources of funds – Many areas have grant-making trusts and foundations, and some county councillors have locality budgets for charitable donations. Stress the difference your event will make - increased confidence for your volunteer helpers, for instance.

Online fundraising and social media – Reach more donors, keep them interested and make life easier by:

• Creating an online donations page. As donors pay at the time of sponsorship, there’s no need to chase them afterwards (phew!). We can still provide a paper sponsor form for those who do not like to give online. You can set up an online donations page at www.justgiving.com.
• Using email to send a link to your online donations page to people all over the world.
• Using our downloadable information on the difference the money you raise will make.
• Keeping things interesting by updating your supporters on how things are going through email or a blog.
• Using social media to spread news and updates. Connect to our fundraising facebook page and twitter feed.

Get your fundraising noticed – you can order posters by clicking here and read our publicity tips and sample press release by clicking here. Publicity raises much-needed awareness as well as funds.

Guess to Give - keep things lively with a sweepstake. How quickly will you run the marathon? How many stitches will you knit? Supporters pay £3. to enter with 50p from each guess going into a prize fund for the winner and £2.00-£2.50 coming to charity. Visit www.guess2give.com.

Side events - you may be fundraising for a special event but perhaps you could reach your target more easily by holding a side event - cake sale, raffle, quiz, sale of DVDs...

• or use our printed donation form. You can also download a Gift Aid Declaration Form to allow us to claim back the tax you have paid on your donation.  Please click here for the form.
• you can also create a donations page for your own sponsored event through Justgiving.  This enables people to sponsor you online or you can sponsor people already raising money for Crohn's and Colitis UK

When you donate via Justgiving they reclaim the income tax you have paid on that sum on our behalf (where you have declared yourself to be a UK tax payer) and add that to your donation before passing the total to Crohn's and Colitis UK.

Crohn's and Colitis UK pays Justgiving a small administration fee for this service which includes the charge made by the credit card company.
